A Storied Past

Saul Ewing’s origins can be traced to 1863 to attorney and art collector John G. Johnson, the most prominent and influential Philadelphia lawyer of the late 19th century. Johnson argued 182 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and practiced law until his death in April 1917. After his death, Johnson’s law practice was taken over by his salaried associates, who formed Pritchard, Saul, Bayard & Evans, which maintained offices at 1835-43 Land Title Building in Philadelphia. In March 1921 the firm was dissolved and a split of attorneys occurred, leading to the foundation of today’s Saul Ewing.

Interdisciplinary and Targeted Approach

Our attorneys employ a unique cross-practice and collaborative approach in client engagements, often working seamlessly from several of the Firm’s offices as one team. Saul Ewing’s client services team approach ensures that the experience and talents of our attorneys are aligned with the needs of our clients.

Culture and Vision

The Firm is proud of its collegial, teamwork-driven culture, and has enjoyed a strong presence in the arts and cultural community since its inception in the late 19th century. We recognize the critical role the arts play in making and keeping our communities vibrant and attractive places to live and work. Today our partners volunteer on the boards of many arts-related and philanthropic organizations.

Inclusive and Charitable

Saul Ewing attorneys understand that legal representation extends beyond client work and into our communities. To underscore the Firm’s legal commitment to underserved populations, Saul Ewing launched “We’re All In” in 2005, a unique pro bono program in which all of the Firm’s attorneys pledged to provide 25 hours of pro bono service during the year. As part of the initiative, Saul Ewing chose to focus its pro bono efforts on two underserved populations: the elderly and veterans.

Many of our lawyers are leaders in pro bono organizations in their communities, and dedicate considerable time, effort, and resources to helping the poor and disadvantaged and charitable organizations.

Saul Ewing values and embraces cultural differences and strives to continuously enhance inclusiveness throughout the Firm. Through our Diversity Committee, we are committed to cultivating a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. Saul Ewing recently designed a diversity program tailored specifically to our needs, involving recruitment, hiring, and training practices. Our diversity efforts are continuously enhanced through our participation in organizations and programs that promote an inclusive society.
