Matthew J. Smith

Matthew Smith represents clients facing complex commercial litigation, particularly institutions of higher education and businesses facing allegations of white collar crime and government enforcement actions.  He also has experience defending disputes involving both ERISA and non-ERISA governed insurance policies.  Additionally, Matthew handles a wide array of general litigation matters.

Select representations include:

  • Representing a large health insurer in multiple ERISA and non-ERISA disability, life insurance, and personal injury actions.
  • Representing higher education institutions in civil litigation, Clery Act investigations and Title IX compliance assessments.
  • Representing a global financial firm in a high-value business interruption claim.
  • Representing corporations as well as individual business partners in multiple business disputes and defense of premises liability and personal injury actions.
  • Representing employees of a medical device distribution company in a government investigation regarding allegations of serious FDA violations.
  • Conducting an extensive compliance program effectiveness review of a major network of hospitals.

Prior to joining Saul Ewing, Matthew was a judicial extern for the Honorable Kent A. Jordan in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, where he spent time drafting opinions and memoranda and conducting legal research.

Before earning his law degree, Matthew worked as an archaeological field director and technician for several cultural resource management firms. In those positions, he conducted excavations and supervised numerous archaeological projects and studies across the United States.
