Shelly C. Patel
Shelly Chandra Patel focuses her practice on the financing, acquisition, disposition and leasing of commercial real estate. Lenders, borrowers and REITs are among her clients. She has experience drafting and negotiating commercial leases, loan documents, purchase and sale agreements and related conveyancing documents. Representative transactions include:
- A borrower in a $100 million mortgage loan and a $35 million mezzanine loan in connection with the refinancing of a 21-story, 370,000-square-foot commercial office tower in Boston.
- An international lender in a $65 million loan for the rehabilitation of property in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.
Shelly brings an understanding of businesses practices stemming from her tenure at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (formerly, the New York Stock Exchange Regulation), where she oversaw examinations of various U.S. broker-dealers for compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission rules and regulations from 2002 to 2008. Among other things, she was responsible for (i) evaluating the firms’ anti-money laundering procedures, (ii) verifying the firms’ calculation of market and credit risk exposures, and (iii) reviewing the firms’ risk management framework (i.e., independent price verification, data completeness, counter-party assessment, collateral management, and model approval). Moreover, during law school, she was a judicial intern for the Honorable Joel B. Rosenthal of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Worcester, Massachusetts, which helps her provide clients with insight on bankruptcy issues.
