Thomas E. Shortledge
Tom Shortledge brings practical experience in engineering and insight as an intellectual property manager to his work assisting clients with drafting and prosecuting patent applications and other IP matters. Prior to joining Saul Ewing, Tom evaluated inventions and managed patent portfolios in support of the intellectual property strategy for a market-leading technology company that researches and develops touch, display and biometrics products used in mobile devices, personal computers and automobiles. Tom’s role in the company as an IP manager included aligning IP strategy and tactics with corporate vision and market trends, building patent portfolios around new product lines, and adjusting patent drafting and prosecution strategies to conform with court rulings. He also has experience assisting attorneys in patent litigation, including defending challenged patents, internal competitive and infringement analysis and due diligence needed to assess opportunities for mergers and acquisitions.
Tom’s work includes patent preparation and prosecution and support with the preparation of legal opinions related to patentability, landscape and freedom to operate studies. He also draws on his past experience as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to support his patent work for clients. His work for the U.S.P.T.O. included examining patent applications in the fields of speech recognition and natural language computer systems.
