Saul Ewing sponsored the first ever Delaware Innovation Week, presented by 1313 Innovation and organized by Technical.ly. DIW is a weeklong celebration of technology and innovation, taking place November 13th through the 21st, throughout the state, including many events in Wilmington. The annual open calendar of events welcomed 1,000 people across more than 20 events with more than 30 partners and sponsors that showed off the state's vibrant and varied tech and entrepreneurship community in tandem with Global Entrepreneurship Week.
The event’s Business Conference is a one-day conference for experienced and new entrepreneurs organized by Technical.ly, which featured morning introductory sessions for launching a business and an afternoon Failfest with veteran entrepreneurs sharing lessons.
Saul Ewing Labor and Employment partner, Dena Calo, lead a session during the Business Conference titled “Employment Essentials for Entrepreneurs.” This session covered many hot topics that entrepreneurs need to be aware of in the ever changing world of employment law. Most notably, Dena discussed employer background checks and the new stringent standard for employees v. independent contractors. The discussion also included important changes to reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers, wage and hour changes on the horizon, and what you need to do to plan now. The session offered great take aways for entrepreneurs to get their start-ups legally compliant and ready for growth.
